Dr. Gave The Wrong Diagnosis
Posted: Aug 18, 2008, 7:40 PM CST

Last night my granddaughter was at the hospital with a fever, the dr. said she had a virus and take her home.

This afternoon her fever was very high and she was screaming, refusing to eat or drink. Took her to the pediatrician as an emergency and turns out her ears are so infected they were ready to burst. The dr. at the emergency last night had looked at her ears and said they were fine.

The pediatrician sent her back to the hospital to have blood tests, and to put drops into her ears which freezes them.

Should we report the other doctor, how can you not look into a child's ears and not see how infected they are. She is 16 months.

The doctors could not believe that she was sent home yesterday and not admitted. She was almost admitted today but after her ears were frozen she started to drink again.

Yeah .. but thankfully ours worked out the other way around..

My son was admitted to hospital .. and had loooads of tests..

The doctors told me they thought he had Leukemia shock

until my son eventually remembered to tell us he had been bitten by a rat.. (which had made all his lymph nodes swell up to the size of Japan!)

PHEW!!! applause applause

report the doctor hun,
it could mean a life next time.

My friend had got fever and at the general hospital (where her parents took her) they said it was just a flu and gave her painkillers and some antibiotic.
It was staphylococcus and she died 2 days later (after yet another visit to the hospital where they realised what it was but it had gotten too late to do anything).
She was 16 years old, she would have been 27 today sigh

Anyway, these incidents should be reported, not only because of THAT doctor, but also because it sends a signal to all the rest that they should either do their job correctly or get off the proffesion.

That's why I hate doctors....they are always "Practicing" medicine...

They never seem to get it right to the point they can *stop* practicing and just do it!

Good you got it right in the end, it can damage the hearing for life

I think you should report it, for two reasons. The first being to find out how the doctor could fail to diagnose it, maybe an error in practise and needs to be sorted to avoid it to happen again.

The second reason is of course if the doctor already had reports about being "sloppy" then he needs to be focused upon. If there is only one or two reports since earlier, your may make a difference.

Is there not a self-reporting mechanism in the hospitals? Where a doc can report himself to study a mistake like this?

Maybe you should go back to the first doc and speak to him and hear what his reaction would be to this?

I am hoping that the peditrician or the other emergency dr. will do something as they appeared to be really upset with the first dr. They could not believe that she was just at the emergency a few hours earlier and he let her go home without any medicine.

I thought any dr. could look into your ears and tell if they are infected or not.

Today she is drinking again and playing. She hates the drops in her ears and the medication.
